Found this while looking for Thermogenesis k. from cryo toxins:
this mentions the different shapes of erythrocytes, which may
pertain to some links to Mr. Carnicom's find.

knizocytes
Called also bridge cells by some histologists. The terms leptocytes and target cells may also be used to describe these cells.
The term knizocyte describes a specific shape form of erythrocytes that deviates from the standard form (see also: discocytes). These cells have two concavities instead of the one seen with normal erythrocytes. Like normal red blood cells, knizocytes show a clear central area, but this is crossed by a thin strip of hemoglobin.
Increased numbers of these cells have been found in patients with chronic hepatitis (Turchetti et al, 1997), vascular diseases (Turchetti et al, 1998), in a patient with familial lecithin:cholesterol acyltrasferase (LCAT) deficiency (Suda et al, 2002), and in particular in patients with thalassemia (see: leptocytes).
For other aberrant shape forms of erythrocytes see also: poikilocytes.
For other entries pertaining to hematopoiesis see also the Hematology Dictionary section of this encyclopedia.
For other relevant entries see also: Cell types.
